    1. 环境污染物与脑神经干细胞的毒理学研究

    Manganese (Mn) is important for protein and energy metabolism, bone mineralization, metabolic regulation, and cellular protection from reactive oxygen species. Mn compounds can be present as dust particles in the air, and dissolved in ground water or drinking water, which can also be consumed from our diet. Exposure of mature animals and humans to excess Mn produces neurological disorders, also known as manganism, with symptoms similar to those of Parkinsonism. Neonates and children are at an increased risk of Mn-induced neurotoxicity compared with adults due to their ability to achieve higher brain Mn levels and altered brain dopamine concentrations following Mn exposure. My investigations revealed that exogenously administered Mn targets developing nervous system causing permanent disruption of normal growth. My finding also pointed to epigenetic mechanisms as mediators in the excess Mn produced neurodegenerative disorder.

    1. 环境污染物与内分泌代谢的毒理学研究Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are members of different groups of chemicals, including drugs, pesticides, industrial by-products, alkylphenols, synthetic steroids, and so on, which usually exist simultaneously in our living environment with a self-aggravating tendency from year to year. EDCs have been known to interfere with endocrine systems by mimicking, blocking and triggering actions of hormones and thereby influence the health and reproductive system of humans and wildlife. EDCs can lead to serious side effects on human health at very low concentrations and always potent and long-lasting. We developed a rapid and sensitive method for the simultaneous determination of these compounds in the environment using developing zebrafish.
